Tehri
About This Place
Tehri, officially known as Tehri Garhwal, is a prominent mountainous district in Uttarakhand, India, best known for housing the Tehri Dam, which is the highest dam in the country and one of the highest in the world. Situated along the Bhagirathi River, this massive engineering project led to the submergence of the historic Old Tehri town and resulted in the creation of a vast, 42-square-kilometer emerald-green reservoir known as Tehri Lake. Today, the population resides in New Tehri, a modern, planned township built at an altitude of 1,550 meters that serves as a scenic hill station with a pleasant climate. The region has transformed into a major hub for adventure tourism, offering activities like jet skiing, parasailing, and boating, while remaining deeply rooted in its Garhwali cultural heritage and serving as a gateway to various Himalayan pilgrimage sites.
